Fan Expo 2011 Pt 2

So, I’ve officially recovered from the silliness that is Fan Expo. I must say, things went smooth. There was a hiccup with the premium booth facing the back of the room, but it looks like that sorted itself out. Didn’t pre-book for next year, however. I can’t support how the con is ran, but that’s a discussion for another time. Suffice to say, the people were great and I had lots of fun. Thanks for my Adrienne, Vikki, and Ryan for your help all weekend. An extra thanks to Amanda of the Mad Hattery for being there. Was lots of fun! Sheesh. Not even done thanking people. The guys over at the Jack and Pookie booth made this great as usual, thanks to them. And last, but not least. Thanks to everyone who came. Without you this show wouldn’t have been the stupendous success it was. I’ll be back next year -if- people ask enough. Will definitely be if Hobbystar turns over a new leaf, but you never know.

So, next show I’m planning to go to is Naru2u in Ottawa. First con I’ll truly have to travel to get to, but I’m sure it’ll be fun. Let’s see how much I can get done in three weeks, ‘eh?

Deviant Art updates coming up later today. Up now.

Fan Expo 2011 Pt. 1

So, I’d like to thank everyone who’s come out and seen me at Fan Expo this year. I apologise that I haven’t really been doing much in the way of updating as I’ve been busying myself looking for a day job to support my starving artist life style.

So far this weekend.. Well, okay, Thursday and Friday have been amazing. So many supportive people have come out and said many a kind word to me and kept me busy with the constant requests for new pieces.

Some good news: Tomorrow I will be crafting new dice bags since people seem to love these.

The bad news: I have two gauntlets left, it’s a mismatched pair. I will be out of stock until after Fan Expo until I can re-supply metal and rubber rings.

More good news: This means if you’re looking for gauntlets, you can very easily commission me for one or a pair. Well, on that note commissions are currently open. Anyone who’s looking for commissions please, e-mail me at Marc@ricehatsamurai.com. If you have a description of what you want? Great! If you have a picture, even better!

I’m also looking for other conventions across the country to go to since I’ve officially decided this will be my final Fan Expo – unless there’s enough demand that I return. If you wish me to return, again, mail me, add me on facebook – Rice Hat Samurai Studio group will be up as of Monday – or find some other way of letting me know you want me there.

Anyhow. It’s time for sleep. Updates on deviant art on Tuesday. See you all tomorrow at the show! Look for me near the Ubisoft booth!

Anime North 2011

I’d like to first send a thank you to my neighbours. Jack and Pookie Publishing and the folks down at First Age Studios for being there. Then last, but not least, thanks to the fans for all their support, without it, this wouldn’t have been the best Anime North I’d been to date. I have a lot of work to do now to get ready for Con Bravo.

Now, about that prep work. Anyone have any requests of what they’d like to see in the future? I’m gaining access to a rolling mill, opening up the possibilities of what I can craft. I will be doing more filligree. Y’know that fancy wirework? Yeah. That. Love making filligree. That does not mean I’ll be phasing out my chain maille work, quite the opposite. I want to offer things that everyone wants. That’s why I want your input! If there’s any shows you want to see me at, let me know as well.

I have a large number of pieces to post to Deviant Art. Once I talk to a few friends I will be upgrading the website with a better gallery, until then, go here to look for gallery updates.

Here. Have a blurry image from my cell phone.

I love my job.

See all the fun you missed for not being there? Should be ashamed of yourself.

Classes, new stuff!

Good news everybody! I have new stuff to post! Huzzah! I’ll get pictures up later since it’s a beautiful sun shiney day. It’s mostly bracelets.. that has possibilities for rings and earrings as well. How about that? Oh. I’m also talking fine jewellery, not just maille.

Another update is there’s a class I’ll be teaching this Saturday, September 11, 12pm, at Bayshore Hobbies. $20. This week we’ll be learning dragonscale. Pictures of samples to follow later today.

Fan Expo 2010 pt 1, 2, 3

Huzzh! Fan Expo is now done, thanks to everyone who came by the table and said hi! An even bigger thanks to all those who continue to help me pay my bills!

So, suffice to say, I’m feeling really positive about the people at the con. They were nice, supportive, and showed a lot of interest in what I’m doing. Good to know I’m doing things right as I continue to carve myself a little niche in the convention/jewellery/independent artist scenes. As of this very second, I’ve practically just gotten home and have sat down to write this which means it’ll be another day before the online shop gets its big update. A very big one. Well, as far as chain maille goods go. I’ll be adding a slew of bracelets and the chain bikinis. In the next little while I’m going to be slowing down with the mailling to do some serious work on jewellery, I’ve got some active commissions at the moment that need attention now that the con is over and I need to go straight into preparing for a bunch of art shows I’ll be appearing at over the holiday season.

I promise there’ll be more pretty shinies. Lots of them.

Fan Expo 2010

Hey ‘folks.

Okay. Admittedly it’s been a while since I last updated. A lot has happened, and I’ve been slowly losing what little sanity I have. It’s not much, but I’d really like to keep it.

Suffice to say, still working on stock for Fan Expo, got a few bikinis in the works, got some more heavy bracers, and a few pieces of super shiny jewellery in the works. Yes, I’m being vague on purpose. I’ve got quite a bit of work to do (commissions, woo!) and so little to do it in.

On a totally unrelated note, I’ll be teaching again this Saturday at Bayshore Hobbies. $20, bring a couple pairs of pliers and a sense of humour.

Con Bravo Day 2 and Battle Report!

Okay. I clearly need to go clobber someone with my Mecha Russia forces in Warmachine if I’m using “Battle Report” in a title. Moving on.

First, I have to say thank you to the staff and con goers at Con Bravo. You’re all fantastic people, I enjoyed talking to everyone who came to my booth… which is mostly why I stayed at my booth and sent my bikini kitty out to mingle with the masses. Seriously. You’re all awesome. I’ll be watching the boards for Artist Alley again and I’m so very there. More than likely getting a hotel room this time because I hate commuting with an unearthly passion.

Next, I have to say, for its first year, I can sum up Con Bravo in one word: Fantastic. As I said, great staff, great people, great venue. Solid first year, guys.

Lessons I’ve learned from this con:

1. Smaller cons definitely have a more personal feel (well, yeah, of course. You’re a genius, Marc).
2. Having a booth babe is definitely awesome
3. I have learned to re-love wearing a dress shirt rolled up, with a chain tie on and my bracers.
4. Bring. More. Stock. I make a ridiculous number of things. There’s things I didn’t make because I admittedly was slacking off. I’m giving it my all next year.
5. World’s smallest Megatron is freakin’ awesome.

Well, okay, not an entirely serious list, but there’s still a lot I have to do to get my presentation up to snuff. Hopefully it’ll be more on the ball at Fan Expo. Might show up at some other cons between now and then, but I’ll be going as myself, not as a dealer. Besides, I think it’s time for the Rice Hat Samurai to go do something other than peddle wares.

Then again, that’s my job. Hm. Okay. Go to a con and relax. There we go! Maybe I should go see Montreal.. Hmm…

Con Bravo Day 1

So, I must say. I like this con. I like this con a lot. The staff is great, the dealers/artist area is cozy.. and the congoers? In short, you guys rock. So far I’ve had a ridiculously fun time at this brand spankin’ new con and it seems everyone else is too. I do wish now that I’d paid for a hotel room and just stayed (I’ve gotten an overwhelming amount of support!), but alas I am home now getting ready for bed. I’ll see you all tomorrow morning. Bright n’ early. Keep on rockin’.

The Rice Hat Samurai at Con Bravo! and other such news!

Good news, everybody! We’re doomed!

Err. Wait. No we’re not! I’m gonna be at Con Bravo this coming weekend, so come out and support a brand spankin’ new anime convention and a cute little Asian jeweller/chain mailler! I’ll have my band rings back since I kept getting asked about those at Anime North. I’ll again have my usual array of wares.. and a full table to boot!

As for new things in the works, well, again on the rings, an oldy but goody of course. I’ll start crafting them out of sterling silver. Fully soldered. Fully customized for you. I’m pondering doing up a gold one.. If anyone is interested in buying one of course. Gold ain’t cheap y’know.

Also, if you’re looking to learn, I’ll be teaching at Bayshore Hobbies on the 17th of July. What it’ll cost: $20. What you need: A couple comfortable pairs of pliers. What you’ll get: Materials, 2-4 hours of my time. Apparently my time’s worth the cost of a couple pints of good beer. Hm. I do like good beer.

In other news, the commissions are still open. If you’re looking for something special, especially in the jewellery persuasion, drop me a line! Well. Even if you’re looking for chain.. Well, who am I kidding? I’m still more than happy to help!

Work, work, work

So, life’s been.. odd. Since AN I’ve had a number of active projects which includes making a pendant, pricing a suit of armour, and making more chain bikinis. Well, I gotta say one thing about this: Life is good. That also accounts as to the lack of site updates, albeit that’s no real excuse, but hey, I’m doing something now.

Next week I’m teaching another class at Bayshore Hobbies. 12pm, $20, bring two pairs of teethed needle nose pliers. I’m looking at putting forward actual projects after this class. Yes! I’ll have some sort of plan! It’ll range from simple armour crafting – small scale coifs for plush animals, to doing up some nice jewellery in nice metals (read: silver). I may teach some basic jewellery techniques in the future, I’m not 100% sure as I want to know what everyone’s interests are.

Another piece of news is I’ll be appearing at Con Bravo! at the beginning of next month! So if you’ve got a hankering to meet me in person, that’s where I’ll be. Month after I’ll be appearing at Fan Expo. Soloing Fan Expo this year, so I’ll have an entire table full of my stuff. Hopefully have some good company with me there too and a few chain bikinis for any interested parties.

As for now, it’s time for me to cut more coils, carve more wax. If we’re all lucky, I’ll have some pictures of waxes to post!
